France

Wine and France are absolutely inseparable. From the classics of Bordeaux, Burgundy or Champagne to the up and coming Appellations and Vins de Pays of the Languedoc, wine is found pretty much throughout the land. The concept of “terroir”, defines French winemaking, locating certain wines on specific soils and creating a vast array of styles and different quality levels, from everyday favourites to the greatest wines in the world. Although there are few really strong wine brands from France when compared with the New World, we believe there are many fantastic opportunities with the right approach.

Spain

Wine is right at the heart of Spanish life and there are few countries that boast the raw ability of Spain when it comes to growing vines and making outstanding wines. Known for such diverse classics as Sherry, Cava and Rioja, it is also acknowledged that Spain is the source of some of the world’s most distinctive and exciting modern wines. Look out for varied wine styles from native varieties such as the red Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell and white Verdejo and Albariño. Also, try exploring beyond Rioja as there are around 60 Denominaciones de Origen to discover.

Italy

Italy needs no introduction as it produces and exports more wine than any other country. More importantly, from our point of view, it offers the greatest variety of wines, ranging through almost every colour, flavour and style imaginable. Like the other classic European regions, Italian wine is perfectly matched with its cuisine. Wines of the Sangiovese grape, like Chianti, are sensational with any tomato-based Mediterranean food. On the other hand, risottos and pastas with pesto and creamy sauces pair brilliantly with refreshing, dry whites like Soave or Pinot Grigio.
