Description
Vineyards are near Almendralejo, centred on the old Roman ' Ruta de la Plata' or Silver Route which became famous in Spain as a trading center of Silver from the north of Spain from the mines of Bierzo to gold from the conquests of South America which both travelled up and down the west of Spain. The wine is dark crimson red in colour. On the nose there is intense wild rapsberry fruit with complex notes of clove and black pepper and on the palate the wine is rich with ripe black fruits, well integrated oak flavour of vanilla and cinnamon. Great with with grilled steaks, roast beef, spicy sausage pizza, fresh gazpacho soup, or mild cheeses.
Winemaking
There is a warm and dry climate with contiental influence from mainland Spain, moderated by a slight Atlantic influence which come in from Portugal and the Guadiana River. Rich , deep red clay soils known locally as ' Tierra de Barros' which permit old vine Tempranillo vines to develop root systems and survive in what is a hard vine growing environment. 2009 was a fine vintage for the area of Extremadura, with perfect picking conditions and a steady maturation of the grapes with no rain or disease pressure during harvest. The hand picked grapes are crushed into small, stainless steel fermenters. Controlled fermentation took place at 28 - 30 degrees C with pumpover and destilage. The wine then spends 6 months in new French & American oak barrels.
