Description
In the halcyon days of the British Empire, a well-bred Englishman traveling first-class to India would always travel POSH – Port Out, Starboard Home. The port side of the boat would have the coolest cabins as well as those with the best views and the same would be true of the starboard cabins on the way back to England. Since that time the word POSH has meant swank, elegant or fashionable. This extraordinarily POSH wine from the dynamic, sun-drenched region of Jumilla in southern Spain is an outstanding example of modern winemaking at its best. The Cabernet Sauvignon reaches amazing levels of ripeness and offers delicious, sweet fruit with notes of spice, while the indigenous Monastrell is a very special grape indeed, adding backbone, complexity and elegance.
Winemaking
Grapes from old vine Monastrell (60 years+) are blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo from vineyards located on poor chalky soil about 10 miles away from the town of Jumilla. Here the summers are always hot and the winters chilly. Yields in the vineyards are pretty low at 3.5 tons / ha thanks to the poor soils, but the grapes are correspondingly fabulous. The wine is made to express as much of the character and quality of the grapes as possible, so it is left in contact with the lees for a 3 month period. Then it goes into oak barrels (70% American / 30% French) for 14 months.
