Description
Garnacha is Spain's second grape after Tempranillo, but for us it's the best, producing ravishingly fruity wines with a wonderful spicy character. This is especially true when it's old vine Garnacha like this blockbuster from Carinena made by one of the top producers in the area, Bodegas Ayles. The nose bursts with pleasing red berry and violet aromas and the low yielding vines result in a wine with body, good structure and balance. It is smooth and velvety and goes well with all red meats, game, rich chicken casseroles or pasta dishes.
Winemaking
The soil in the Ayles vineyards is clay and calcareous. The climate is continental and influenced by a wind the locals call "Cierzo", and there are vast fluctuations between daytime and night time temperatures. Harvesting takes place in September when the grapes have reached optimum ripeness. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and then it spends 3 months in American oak barrels to add a vanilla smoothness and toasty, spicy touch to the flavours.

| Recommendations |
 | This is 100 per cent grenache grapes and is full of peppery mulberry, blackberry jam and saddle leather notes. It lacks finesse and is a bit bitter and sweaty but has gobs of fruit. In other words, it's a perfect backyard burger red.
- Toronto Star | | Beg , Steal or Burro a bottle of this "Kickass" wine. Don't let the irreverent name dissuade you from buying it by the caseload. Medium-bodied, fresh and silky, this wine shows flavours of cassis, cherry, raspberry and wood spice, with a hint of leather and soft, integrated tannins. Remarkably balanced and layered for the money, it's a great choice for vegetarian dishes as well as many pizzas, pastas and sausage and chicken dishes.
- Globe and Mail, Canada | | "The 2005 El Burro "Kickass" Garnacha was fermented in tank and barrel aged for 4 months in American oak. Tasting like a village Cotes du Rhone, this purple colored wine has aromas of kirsch and garrigue, ripe cherry and jammy red currant flavors, and enough structure to last for 3-5 years. It is an excellent value. This wine deftly reveals both elegance and power." Rating: 89 points.
