Description
This Mazuelo, aka Carignan, is the latest addition to the Pilgrimage range, and one of the "Native grapes of Spain" from Extremadura. It's a very approachable wine with pronounced raspberry, cherry and spice and a hint of toasty oak. It's full bodied with intense flavours of soft wild berry fruits and a long, smooth and spicy finish. This wine is perfect with tapas, barbecues, lamb and duck dishes.
Winemaking
The vineyards are located near Almendralejo on clayey soils. Grapes were harvested from the low yielding bush vines in early September 2007 and crushed into stainless steel fermenters where the temperature was precisely controlled. After fermentation the wine was aged in oak barrels for two months.

| Recommendations |
 | Lively and fresh, this Spanish red packs pure berry and cherry fruit backed up by some nice structure. It would be delicious with rare lamb.
- Jamie Goode, Sunday Express | | Here, Scottish winemaker Norrel Robertson has taken Spain's Mazuelo grapa (aka Carignan) and created a big (14 per cent alcohol) dark red with firm tannin that perfectly rounds out the bramble and blackberry fruit and the touches of mint and coconut on which it finishes.
- Brian Elliot, Daily Record | | Chunky, spicy, herby vanilla-toned Carigna. Delicious with jamon serrano from black-legged pig. - Rose Murray Brown MW, The Scotsman | | Weird and wonderful is an expression I use a lot, but this wine really takes the award this year. The nose is crammed with blueberry notes and its whisper of American oak brings a herb and liquorice complexity which gives it its otherworldly appeal – drink it with roasts, stews and serious cheese! - Matthew Jukes | | Mazuelo is the same grape as Carinena, which the French call Carignan and which can be rustic, chewy and astringent. Thankfully, this isn't. In fact, it's exuberantly fruity, but it does have underlying structure and dryness, as well as a light touch of spicy oak. 87/100 - The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com | | Spicy, peppery but nicely acidic...I'd drink with slow-roast lamb and date couscous. - Victoria Moore, The Guardian | | With a tiny bit of oak ageing, this red combines fleshiness with spice and, given the alcoholic heft, surprisingly refreshing acidity (red wine should have refreshing acidity - it's what makes you keep sipping). Good with black pudding, lamb chops, patatas bravas ... - Victoria Moore, The Guardian | | Mazuelo, or carignan, can make tasty solo-variety Spanish reds. This one, produced from low-yielding bush vines, is a bold, chunky, yet juicy red. Bodegas San Marcos had the good sense to hire Master of Wine Norrel Robertson to help to craft this delicious Spanish offering whose concentrated red fruit is great with fatty game birds and duck and goose.
