Description

Falanghina ranks among the most exciting modern white wine varietals in Italy, yet it has been cultivated since Roman times. The market is awash with Pinot Grigio, so it's time to discover something different! It is a bright straw yellow colour with a fruit salad (citrus, pineapple and pear) nose, which also displays floral notes. A classic wine for fish, it is dry, full-bodied, fresh and clean with crisp acidity. I can also be enjoyed with antipasti, grilled chicken and salads.

Winemaking

The hills near the city of Torre Maggiore in Puglia - the "heel of Italy" - are a wonderful location for the cultivation of fine quality grapes. With good ventilation from sea breezes and a marked variety of temperatures, a long ripening season is possible and healthy fruit is the result. The grapes were hand-picked during the 2nd week of September 2008 in typically sunny, dry conditions. Earlier in the year, the weather had been a little cooler than usual and with more rainfall, especially in June and July. When the grapes reached the winery, they were pressed carefully in a protected atmosphere to avoid loss of the delicate aromas. The must then rested for 12-24 hours, after which the sediment is removed and the juice fermented with selected yeasts in temperature controlled conditions. After fermentation, the wine is left in contact with its lees for at least 3 months in order to maximise flavour and body.

Recommendations

This is another fabulous example of one of Italy’s rarest grape varieties - falanghina.  It is on tip top form in this inexpensive wine, with gooseberry, greengage and lime notes cavorting around on your palate.  The acidity is so crisp and thirst-quenching, it can even handle chilli spice and curry heat!

Think along the lines of what your partner would really love - then surprise them. For example, if they're a fan of light, crisp Italian Pinot Grigio, try a glass of Falanghina with its subtle aromatic twist; Giardini Falanghina 2008 is worth a look.

- Olly Smith, Sunday Mail

Falanghina is a Southern Italian star, with a citrus freshness but also a clear, savoury finish. Made for shellfish and seafood.

- Olive magazine

...a spicy, fruity white with delicious, nutty, cinnamon-scented attitude.

- Jane MacQuitty, The Times

Hello, what have we here? We salute Sainsbury's for branching out in their range and this appealing alternative to Pinot Grigio is one of the reasons why. It's bright and surreptitiously aromatic with soft round fruit and some restrained class. Fresh and easy to sip at a fair price. Score 88/100.

- The Wine Gang - http://www.thewinegang.com/

Falanghina is one of southern Italy's most characterful white grapes. This one is typically exotic, with flavours of liquorice, vanilla and angelica spice.

- Observer Food Monthly magazine

Sainsbury's wine shelves have come back from the dead with a transfusion of new wines, including this surprisingly tasty white grown on the dry, hot hills of Puglia. It is made exclusively from the ancient falanghina grape, thought to be the variety responsible for the Roman's famous falernian wine. Modern know-how has turned it into an elegant, zesty, appley, white, with some fine, nutty, cinnamon spice on the finish. A useful, meaty, firest-course wine.

- Jane MacQuitty, The Times Top 100 Winter Wines

Sainsbury’s has just unveiled a new shelf of wines, called Discovery, which focuses on quality wines in the £7 to £12 range. As a selection, they are especially elegant and food-friendly. Highlights include the superior Italian white Giardini Falanghina 2008
