VITICULTURE / VINIFICATION

Spain’s other classic red varietal is now offered alongside the Tempranillo wines that have made Anciano a favourite around the world. Norrel Robertson MW has selected this stunning value wine from Valencia, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast.

Terres dels Alforins is a fertile valley in the south west of the province of Valencia and is called the “Valencian Tuscany”: a multitude of small plots between the sea and the “meseta” where vines have been tended since Roman times. Mostly non-irrigated vineyards with low yields. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks for 7 days at 22°C and then a portion of the wine is matured in oak barrels for 7 months.

VITICULTURE / VINIFICATION

This excellent wine embodies everything that the connoisseur of elegant, traditional Spanish wine loves. Made in the winery of Bodegas Navalon in the small DO Valdepeñas, located in the heart of Spain. The Bodega has been the passion of the same local family for several generations, and specialises in producing classic, oak-aged Spanish red wines that are only released when they have reached the peak of perfection.

Hand picked, perfectly ripe Tempranillo grapes were harvested from rocky vineyards at the start of September. Fermentation was in stainless steel tanks for 8-10 days at controlled temperatures between 24-28°C and was bottled after a short time in contact with oak, to keep the wine young, fresh and vibrant.

Vintage: 2012

D.O.: Valdepeñas DO – Spain
Winemaker: Maria José Marchante
Winery: Bodegas Navalón

VINTAGE NOTES

2012 has been rated “Excellent” by the Valdepeñas DO. Generally, the climate and therefore grape harvest, is remarkably consistent in this part of Spain.

TASTING NOTES

Colour: A ruby coloured wine shading to brick red towards the rim.
Nose: Complex aromas of balsamic and liquorice combine with vanilla, spice and rich fruit compote on the nose.
Palete: Appealing ripe berry and cherry fruit flavours come through at first taste, followed by balanced tannins and a smooth, satisfying finish.

FOOD MATCH

Roast lamb and other grilled red meats, stews and mature cheeses.

VITICULTURE / VINIFICATION

Tempranillo grapes were hand picked from 30 year-old vines in stony vineyards – Valdepeñas means “valley of rocks” – in late August/early September. The soils are clayey lime and there is a chalky layer which retains water to refresh the vines. Altitude helps moderate summer heat, as the climate in Valdepeñas is classic continental, with cold winters and long hot, dry summers.

Fermentation was at controlled temperatures (26-28º C) in stainless steel tanks for 8-10 days. The wine was then matured for at least twelve months in oak barriques with varying toasting levels.
